Danish WTC qualifiers 2015

Last weekend, the 21st and 22nd of Marts, we had the danish WTC qualifiers in Roskiled. Like last year I went with my team Attack With Spell!. The tournament was a blast, and it was great hanging out with most of the danish meta from Copenhagen. Like the real WTC we had to submit our lists before the tournament, so I decided to go with two lists I was relatively familiar with:

Body And Soul tier 4

Wraith Witch Deneghra – WJ: +6

  • Skarlock Thrall
  • Deathjack – PC: 12
  • Nightmare – PC: 10
  • Nightwretch – PC: 4

Ragman – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2

Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3
Mechanithralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 3
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3

Objective: Armory

Lich Lord Asphyxious – WJ: +6

  • Nightwretch – PC: 4
  • Helldiver – PC: 3

Bane Lord Tartarus – PC: 4
Saxon Orrik – PC: 2
Machine Wraith – PC: 1

Bane Knights – Leader & 9 Grunts: 10
Bane Thralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 5
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard – Bane Thrall Officer & Standard 3
Satyxis Blood Witches – Leader & 9 Grunts: 6
– Satyxis Blood Hag – Satyxis Blood Hag 2
Bile Thralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 5
The Withershadow Combine – Malevolus, Admonia, & Tremulus: 5
Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders – Blackbane and 5 Ghost Raiders: 6

Objective: Bunker

Both lists are pretty standard except the blackbanes in the lich2 list. I chose the Armory objective for the Denny list because of the ability to sac pawn to a grunt within 4″. It seems like a nice option, as the list often has 15ish mechanithralls on the table in my turn 3. I thought about taking the Arcane Wonder objective for the lich, but ended up taking Bunker for impervious flesh. I’m not really sure about this decision, but it’s not bad though.

Round 1 – Attack With Spell! vs TEAM AROS SUPER DUPER TOP ELITES OF DOOM

Scenario: Reacon

I got paired against my good friend Simon and his Menoth. I chose to play my body and soul list, as I don’t really like to play the lich against his pSeverius list, and I’m pretty sure that’s the list he’s going to pick. We actually had the exact same matchup the week before, which made the whole game kinda funny πŸ™‚ His list:

Grand Scrutator Severius

  • Blessing of Vengeance
  • Repenter

Initiate Tristan Durant

  • Reckoner

Vessel of Judgment
Choir of Menoth – Leader & 3 Grunts
Vassal of Menoth
Vassal Mechanik
Visgoth Juviah Rhoven & Honor Guard – Rhoven, Gius & Cassian
Exemplar Errants – Leader & 9 Grunts
* Exemplar Errant Officer & Standard
Exemplar Errant Seneschal
The Covenant of Menoth
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord

Objective: Bunker

I won the roll and decided to go first, as pSev has quite a few upkeeps that he likes to get out. I put pursuit on his arcnode, curse of shadows on his vessel and marked for death on rhoven. Nightmare prey his errants. I run all my stuff like I typically do. My jacks in the middle, drudges spread out in the middel, overlords on both flanks close to the drudges and a siren on both flanks. Simon walks his stuff and starts to fire and throws out an ashes to ashes as well as some buffs. He decided not to put up defenders ward on the errants though, but placed them all b2b in a long line to make hellmouth harder. As I realize there’s no defenders ward on the errants I decide that I have to do something about that. They are tough from Rhupert, but all in all I get around 5 or so. This game is quickly turning into a grind and I’m slowly losing. I try to get DJ into melee with his vessel in my turn three. The vessel is protected by a semi circle of errants, and after using a lot of time thinking about how to kill two of them to make room for DJ to charge, I find a way to get NM in there. After killing the first errant I realize that I totally forgot about self sacrifice, which makes it impossible for me to get DJ where I want him. I abandon the plan and try to kill some errants instead. Things are not going my way, and in the end my jacks are killed and my objective destroyed. I clock out grinding and Simon wins 2 – 0 on deathclock. His list is tailored to beat infantry heavy lists so it’s no surprise that I lost. I clearly need more practice against Menoth anti infantry lists πŸ™‚

Round 2 – Attack With Spell! vs HOLD BIZZ

Scenario: Fire Support

In this round I got paired against Benjamin, a fellow Cryx player. He had eAsphyxious and eSkarre, so I was pretty sure he would pick his eAsphyxious list, which he did:

Lich Lord Asphyxious – WJ: +6

  • Deathripper – PC: 4
  • Cankerworm – PC: 5

Bane Knights – Leader & 9 Grunts
Bane Thralls – Leader & 9 Grunts
* Bane Thrall Officer & Standard
Bile Thralls – Leader & 5 Grunts
Satyxis Blood Witches – Leader & 5 Grunts
* Satyxis Blood Hag
The Withershadow Combine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Saxon Orrik

Objective: Arcane Wonder

I always find it interesting playing against Cryx, even though it’s kinda boring playing Cryx vs Cryx. It’s a chance to learn something and see your faction from another perspective. Benjamin is a great player in my opinion, so I was actually looking forward to, most likely, getting my ass kicked πŸ™‚

I’ve always though of eDenny being good against Cryx, so I decided to pick her. But since body and soul contains much more living models than the typical Cryx list, it might not have been the best pick, due to excarnate. I did think about this before the game, but since my other list had living models as well (a full unit of blood witches) I didn’t think it would matter much. My plan was to try to do as much hellmouth as possible to RFP a lot of his feat models. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect, I’m not so sure. Another problem was that he had withershadow combine, meaning I couldn’t put out my upkeeps unless I was willing to take 3D3 damage on Denny for no reason at all, due to Admonias unbinding, so I didn’t πŸ™‚

I’m not sure, but I think I won the roll and went first. I ran my stuff up like always, with the jacks in the middle with drudges, and a unit of overlords and a siren on both sides. Over to him, and he ran all his stuff. He hid his caster and his biles behind 3 clouds and his objective. There was a forest close by on the left flank, where he hid Tartarus and his bane knights. My memory is a bit blank from all those games, but I think I just kinda went forward in my turn 2, without anything in range for charges or sprays.

In his turn 2 the purge hit πŸ™‚ He runs/charges the blood witches and the hag to deny tough on my drudges, puts up puppet master on his caster, moves the arc node forward, moves his caster forward and casts an excarnate on a drudge and kills him. He puts up the soul reaper template as well. Then he moves up two biles and purges my stuff, killing a lot. Tartarus moves forward with the knights. Can’t remember if he charged anything, but he might have, as I remember him doing a thresher on a couple of dudes and making some knights at some point during the game. Wrathe charges a siren and kills her, engaging some drudges and some overlords.

I think this is right before Denny popped her feat. Image courtesy of Kierkegaard.

Things are starting to look bad. I feat and try to go for a hellmouth on tartarus, but he’s just outside 5″. I kill a little bit and turn over the turn. Unfortunately for me BLT was just out of the feat (I’m such an idiot :D), meaning he is free to charge DJ along with his bane knight friends. They wreck DJ and as the lich pops his feat, Nightmare is also wrecked. The lich teleports to his flag to dominate camping a lot of focus. At this point the game is lost, so the only thing I can do is to go for an assassination with the models I have left. I come up with a plan. I use wraith walker, charge the lich and try to port him with dark banishment, turning his back to my army. At the landing spot there’s a nightwretch with two focus that’s going to headbutt him and two necrosurgeons ready for creating 3 mechanithralls each that are going to charge him, auto hitting with pow 15 combo strikes. The plan fails as I don’t break his armor on the charge attack or the attack I bought after charging πŸ™‚ It was a very plesent game, even though I sucked big time πŸ™‚

Round 3 – Attack With Spell! vs DEM FRA GRILLEN

Scenario: Outflank

I can’t remember how the roll went, but I end up being paired against one of the local players from the Aarhus meta, named SΓΈren Jacobsen, who is also a Cryx player. Yay another Cryx on Cryx game πŸ˜€ SΓΈren had a standard Goreshade2 Heresy of Shadows tier 2 list and a Denny1 gunline with Boomhowlers and Nysshunters. I was pretty sure he would pick his gore2 list to be able to remove my upkeeps from Body And Soul with Hex blast, which was exactly what he did. His list:

Goreshade the Cursed

  • Skarlock Thrall
  • Kraken- PC: 12

Bane Knights – Leader & 9 Grunts
Bane Thralls – Leader & 9 Grunts
* Bane Thralls Officer & Standard
Bane Thralls – Leader & 5 Grunts
* Bane Thralls Officer & Standard
Bane Lord Tartarus
Necrotech & Scrap Thrall
Necrotech & Scrap Thrall
Scrap Thralls – 3 Scrap Thralls
Scrap Thralls – 3 Scrap Thralls

Objective: Bunker

I had already thought about this matchup a bit before the tournament, as I know on of my weaknesses is figuring out where I want my upkeeps from Body And Soul to go, as well as prey from Nightmare. As I knew he had to cast Hex Blast on his own stuff to remove my upkeeps, I might as well use that to my advantage. I put pursuit on his kraken, Curse of Shadows on his bane knights and Marked For Death on BLT, forcing him to use some focus and/or his skarlock to get rid of the upkeeps. Nightmare preyed his kraken as I needed some hitting power to get rid of it.

I won the roll and decided to let him start, as his army is pretty slow and as it might give me an advantage on the scenario. He had to at least get rid of Pursuit before moving the kraken, so he shot him in the back removing it. Then Goreshade shot Curse of Shadows of the knights, killing one of them. He put Occultation on his bane knights and ran all his stuff.

So I’m up. I move my dudes up and try to keep my jacks out of charge range of his kraken and his troops. I fill both zones with my dudes, ready to counter attack when his guys enter, and bait a couple of charges. I keep Denny back out of harms way at least 21″ from his kraken. Over to SΓΈren. He removes the last upkeep on BLT (I was really looking forward to this one, as a pow 13 could actually kill him on double 6 :D) and rolled a 9 on damage, giving him 5 boxes. A nice start ^^ Then he charged some of my stuff and moved the kraken forward doing some random shots. The big gun unfortunately killed ragman, as I was dumb enough to position him too close to a drudge. He moves some more guys into the zones.

On my next turn I do two classical Hellmouths. I run two drudges with ghostwalk from the skarlock into a nice bunch of his dudes while not being engaged. DJ does one killing a couple of thralls, and Denny does the other killing 4 or 5 thralls including the officer with a boost. I do a lot of sprays and maybe a couple of drudge charges and turn it over. DJ is now about Β½” too close to the kraken, so he gets a charge from a couple of thralls and the kraken and is wrecked, and he kills some more stuff.

Then it’s me. I give Nightmare 3 focus, the skarlock cast Curse of Shadows on his kraken. Nightmare goes to town on his kraken almost destroying it. Denny cast ghostwalk on my mechanithralls and one of the surgeons makes the more that charge his kraken and wreck it. I spray and kill some more and try to jam him out of the zones, scoring 1 CP.

The battle goes on a couple of rounds before I get Denny into a zone to feat and dominate. I was stupid enough to put her behind a house for some reason, which doesn’t really make any sense, as his kraken ignores LOS with phantom hunter πŸ˜€ I guess it just felt more safe that way πŸ˜€ In the end he can’t really do anything but feat to put dudes into my zone to contest, but it’s not enough. With a shitload of sprays and attacks they are quickly murdered. I don’t remember all the details, but in the end there’s nothing he can do to keep me from winning 5 – 0 on scenario.

It was a really bad matchup for him. His other list might have been better, even though it didn’t have any upkeep removal, but I’m not sure.

Round 4 – Attack With Spell! vs AROS NOMADS ELITE

Scenario: Destruction

Adeptis Rahn

  • Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker
  • Phoenix</li
  • Chimera

Arcanist
Arcanist
House Shyeel Magister
House Shyeel Magister
Mage Hunter Assassin
Mage Hunter Assassin
Dawnguard Sentinels – Leader & 5 Grunts
* Sentinel Officer & Standard
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters – Cylena & 9 Grunts
House Shyeel Battle Mages – Leader & 5 Grunts
Stormfall Archers – Leader & 3 Grunts

Objective: Effigy of Valor

My next opponent was also from the Aarhus meta and also named SΓΈren πŸ™‚ A good friend whom I’ve played quite often and also one of the best players in Denmark imo. His list is quite ranged combined with a lot of great spells and a really offensive feat that can be used to kill a lot of stuff or assassination. Besides this theres also the two MHA’s who everyone hates πŸ™‚

I had played Body And Soul in all of the games up untill now, so I decided to go with the lich. I think both lists are ok against his, but seeing the two MHA’s made med pick the lich, since hellbound ment no charges from 14″ away. I lost the roll and had to be the second player, so I decided on the side that gave me the most defensive position. As this is a killbox scenario I was looking for a place to be safe while supporting the rest of the army.

He ran and put up polarity shield on his pheonix, I ran and put up some clouds and hellbound. I pushed on really offensively to try and get his feat out of the way, and as his list had a lot of focus on ranged attacks, I had to do something to get close. He feats and shoots a lot of my stuff. I think I popped the mini feat on the blood witches to try and minimize the casualties there. Over to SΓΈren. He pops the feat and starts killing all my stuff. I can’t remember how much of my stuff he killed, but I still had some knights, a couple of witches some black banes and bane thralls. I also had some biles, so I set up an excarnate purge on one of his sentinels that he used to jam. I put out the soul reaper and do a purge killing like 5 or 6 dudes, giving me 3 souls.

I’m still in the game and I’m up on time, but somehow things start to go down hill from here. The pheonix is giving me problems so I move up Admonia to try and disbind polarity shield. Unfortunately she is killed before this happens. My knights don’t really have the punch to take it down when they have to walk in and swing which is a big problem.

The game goes on a bit, and I pop my feat trying to remove what I can. The pheonix still refuse to die even though I get a thrall from the feat on it to apply dark shroud. In the end I end up using too much time and lose on death clock. It’s actually a shame, as I think I could have won the game on death clock if I had played a bit faster and smarter. But what the heck, I learned something, and playing SΓΈren is always a pleasure πŸ™‚

Round 5 – Attack With Spell! vs MARTINS VENNER

Scenario: Incursion

I got paired up against another Retribution player for the final round. A very nice guy just getting into the danish tournament scene. He had Rahn and Issyria, and judging by the amount of shooting in the Issyria list, I was pretty sure he would pick that, and he did. I picked the lich, as I wasn’t too keen on playing Denny2 with all the magical guns and arcane assassin, and the extra damage dice against jacks on MHSF. Besides, the lich has a feat that’s excellent for wrecking a colossal and hellbound for not getting charged by a MHA. His list:

Issyria, Sibyl of Dawn

  • Hyperion

Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Mage Hunter Strikeforce – Leader & 9 Grunts
* Mage Hunter Commander
Mage Hunter Strikeforce – Leader & 5 Grunts
* Eyriss, Mage Hunter Commander
Stormfall Archers
Arcanist
Arcanist
Fane Knight Skeryth Issyen
Mage Hunter Assassin
Mage Hunter Assassin

Objective: Bunker

Before getting the game on my opponent told me that this was his first time playing against Cryx, so I offered him a quick run down of what all my stuff was about, so he knew a bit more what was going on. I felt kinda bad for the guy, not having seen what a lich2 list can do with excarnate, biles, the feat, banes, and the list goes on πŸ™‚

I’ve played Issyria a couple of times, and I’ve hadn’t had much difficulties against her. She has a nice feat for ignoring stealth and getting some extra accuracy and damage out, but besides ignoring stealth, the rest of her feat isn’t as bad for my list unless he can get to my caster.

I lost the roll and chose a side with a hill, giving him a side with a house right in the middle just in from of his deployment zone. I figured that would be kind of annoying for him having a colossal in his list. He ran all his stuff up having the large unit of MHSF on my left flank and the smaller one on the right, hyperion in the middle right beside the house and a MHA on either flank I think.

Then it’s me. I run everything forward pretty aggressively to get in his face and get him to feat. I have knights on the left flank in a forest across from the full unit of MHSF with BLT close by, and my thralls on my right with blackbanes arround a hill, giving some of them elevation. I put up hellbound and two clouds in front of the lich and place him forward out of harms way on the hill with biles hiding with him behind the clouds. The blood witches pop the mini feat, forcing some decisions as he can’t have magical weapons on both units.

Over to my opponent, and just like I figured, he popped his feat. Everything shoot and a lot of my stuff died like expected. Then it’s me and I know just what I’m supposed to do. I walk the node forward, i put puppet master on the lich and walk him forward and excarnate an unlucky MHSF dude. I put out the soul reaper template and teleport back after placing a bile at max distance forward. I walk the biles forward and do a nice purge getting Aianne, Holt, an arcanist, all three SFA as well as three dudes from the MHSF unit. They all die in wondrous acidic puke! On the other flank whats left of the witches charge forward killing as much as possible and even getting a couple of kills with death strike. BLT goes forward cursing the MHSF on my left flank, and the 5ish knights left charge into the MHSF as well killing even more. The three remaining blackbanes, with blackbane himself still alive (something that not often happens) run into the remaining MHSF with eiryss on the right flank to engang and threaten them with free strikes. I block the hyperion with my helldiver to ensure some control of where it’s standing the next turn.

Things are starting to look bad for him with most of his units killed or tied up and only his caster, Issyen and the hyperion left. He gets some shots of with the hyperion and kills a couple of models with Issyen, but nothing much.

My next turn is going to be my feat turn. I kill of most of what’s left on both flanks and charge his hyperion with the blood hag dispelling Inviolable Resolve. Then I run in a machine wraith to engage his colossal, to target instead of the hyperion as I remembered that Issyria has arcane vortex. A nice trick that I unfortunately found out was errata’ed after the tournament. I wouldn’t have meant a world of difference though, as I had plenty of hitting power to take his colossal down. I score two points and pass the turn.

There’s isn’t really anything he can do at this point, having only 2 or 3 models left on the table, one of them being his caster who doesn’t have any attacks. He contests one of the flags getting me to three points, and I clear the flag getting the last two points that I need.

This was a bit of a walk over, but I tried to help the guy learn something about Cryx and gave him advice on some moves during the game. I figured we would get a much better game if he got a bit of help and a couple of take backs. It was a very relaxed game and I’d like to think that I was a nice and friendly opponent πŸ™‚ It’s always nice to see new people at the tournaments, especially in such as small meta as the danish. I find it important to give new players a nice experience playing this game if I can πŸ™‚

The kraken

People often do something extraordinary with such a big model as the Kraken, and so did I. There’s some crazy conversions out there, and while I didn’t really go down that road, I think my kraken ended up pretty good and quite unique, while still not taking a crazy amount of time to do. This isn’t exactly something I did yesterday. It has been done for quite some time, but I never really got all the WIP photos together. And since I have this blog, why not just put them on here πŸ™‚

I thought a great deal about what to do with all that space on the front of the model and ended up with an idea involving 100ish skulls. So I bought 100 skulls and a gory base, got hold of a Warhammer Fantasy skeleton warrior and some green stuff. This is what came out of it:

Thoughts on progression with Blindwater in JML

Rask is most likely casting Fury and/or Boundless Charge in this old photo.

Rask is most likely casting Fury and/or Boundless Charge in this old photo.

This is pretty much a quick rewrite of a post I did on the Minions forum, but I think it would suit my JML section having a similar article. And since I already spend some thought and time on this post, I might as well reuse some of the fine words ^^

So I’ve played some Blindwater in the past and own a bunch of stuff already. Haven’t played the gators for quite some time, so I figured I would give them a go in the JML. The first couple of weeks is Barny ofc, and I’m thinking it will go something like this:

Bloody Barnabas – WB: +6

  • Blackhide Wrastler – PC: 9
  • Ironback Spitter – PC: 8

[add Snapper + Feralgeist for 15 points]
[add full unit of posse, remove the Feralgeist, add a Croak for 25 points]

I’m not sure about removing the Feralgeist, since it’s really nice for gator tossing, but having two in a list at 25 points might be one too many. I could add the swamp gobbers though. I did also consider taking a Totem Hunter instead of the Snapper at 15 points, but a more defensive approach with access to Spiny Growth seems like a better idea, but both are fine choices.

Then comes the caster swap, and I’m thinking Rask would be nice here. Haven’t tried him out yet, as my gators have been on pause since before he was released. It’s still 25 points and must contain the battle box contents, so I don’t have a whole lot of options. I guess the most logical step here would be to take the same 25 point list as the week before, while just swapping the caster for something like this:

Rask – WB: +6

  • – Blackhide Wrastler – PC: 9
  • – Bull Snapper – PC: 3
  • – Ironback Spitter – PC: 8

Croak Hunter – PC: 2
Gatorman Posse – Leader & 4 Grunts: 9

As for further progression I’m thinking another unit of posse and possible a witch doctor if I can fit him in. It might be a good idea to have the swamp gobbers in this list, as I have no Bog Trogs for call to sacrifice. A bit of protection for Rask with a cloud would good.

Rask is an amazing caster with a great feat for positioning your army before charging in and killing a lot of stuff. He solves a lot of problems for the gators with his spells and abilities.

  • The feat like mentioned above. No targeting of your models by attacks or charges by models more than 5″ away. This is great for setting up.
  • SPD 5, RAT 7 and a RNG 10 POW 12 ROF 1 magical gun with three different ammo types. Arcane interference like eEiryss, which is great for removing focus from a caster, disruption on jacks or removing an animus or upkeep on a model. Energy Siphon for removing a focus or fury point from a model. And last but not least, Paralysis for stopping runs/charges and reducing the model hits DEF to 7.
  • A great spell list consisting of: Admonition, Boundless Charge, Fury and Inhospitable Ground. All are nice and cover a lot of issues the gators have, especially the combination of Boundless Charge and Fury is nice on a heavy warbeast like a Wrastler or a Swamp Horror. P+S 16 Posse with Fury is also a thing!

He’s defensive stats are 15/15, which is not great, but not too bad either. He mostly likes to keep himself safe from shooting and melee and play it as far back as he can. This shouldn’t be a problem as he threatens 17″ on his gun, which is the only thing he really uses besides buffing his army and popping his feat. I am really looking forward to playing him.

Journeyman League week 1 part 2

SO Saturday of week one there was gaming day at the LGS in Aarhus. Again this event had a quite impressive turn out with some of the regulars as well as some players I don’t know so well yet. I quickly found a game against Mikkel, the guy who is organizing the journeyman league in Aarhus. My apologies for not taking any pictures and not having anything meaningful for putting in this post πŸ™‚

He was playing the Cryx alternate battle box:

Iron Lich Asphyxious – WJ: +6

  • Leviathan – PC: 9
  • Deathripper – PC: 4
  • Nightwretch – PC: 4

I think he started, putting the pressure on by running all his stuff up pretty aggressive, with the Leviathan in the middle, an arc node on each side and his caster hiding behind a house. I then went. Put up Warpath and a Swamp Pit, and charged my caster into it. Then ran both my beasts there to hide from his shooting.

Then things started to go bad. He walks his arc node up and puts Parasite on my Spitter and casts a Hellmouth on it, boosting the damage. The poor beast is only ARM 18, so at dice – 1, he was in for a world of hurt. I think he feated that turn to finish it off, so my Spitter didn’t really get to do anything in this game.

The rest of the game is a bit foggy in my memory, but I think I feated, knocking down both his arc nodes while staying inside a swamp pit somehow. The game came down to me trying to throw Barny and get a lucky deviation where I could still cast Rise on him with the Wrastler and proceed to charge his caster. It didn’t happen the right way, but I did get another chance at staying in the game, as the failed attempt had Barny in walking range of a wreck marker, which meant that he was relatively safe in my opponents turn.

In his turn he backed away and did mostly nothing but camp. I could see where this game was going, and there was no way I could my caster in melee with his. In the end I tried a push on Barny to get him close enough to charge and maybe kill his Leviathan and win the game. I got my caster on his jack, but needed nothing more than spectacular damage rolls to kill it, which I didn’t get. So Barny was standing there dry on fury and got a 7 focus Asphyxious in the face. I was hoping for some tough rolls, but they never came πŸ™‚

It was a really crappy matchup for me I think, as I couldn’t have done anything as far as I can see to keep my opponent for spell slinging my stuff to death. The Iron Lich has a nasty spell assassination, and in such small games your kinda fucked when you loose a heavy warbeast with nothing to show for it.

The second game was against my good friend Lamoron and the nasty Legion alternative battle box:

Thagrosh, Prophet of Everblight – WB: +5

  • Harrier – PC: 2
  • Nephilim Soldier – PC: 5
  • Ravagore – PC: 10

This list is quite the toolbox and packs quite a punch. You have -2 STR while in the command of Thagrosh, he can give all models in his battle group consealment, can throw a free animus each turn, get a free fury point if he needs it, give out +2 STR to a model and the list goes on. He has a good high p+s melee weapon as well as a POW 12 spray. All this combined with a nice battle group containing a fucking Ravagore is just crazy πŸ˜€ And then there’s the feat… It’s like he’s playing 5 to 10 points more than you are in most situations!

I knew it was going to be a tough game with this kind of list being piloted by a great player who is no newcomer to the ways of Legion. I did have some thoughts about this matchup before the game started and a couple of tricks to aid me, so my odds weren’t to terrible. I was hoping to stay safe in my swamp pit with Warpath up while my Turtle (the mini Ravagore ^^) kept shooting his stuff, to force him to come to me. And when he did, I would kill whatever he sent at me with the Wrastler to utilize snacking and RFP one of his beasts to prevent it from being feated back. I would have to put a bit of damage on the Wrastler first, if he chose to charge something else. A good plan, if I should say myself πŸ™‚

He wins the roll and runs all his stuff up to a wall in the middle of the board having Fog of War up as well as Draconic Blessing on his Soldier. Then it’s my turn. I put up Warpath and put out a Swamp Pit. I then place Barny and his beasts inside and put out a shot with the Spitter on the Ravagore, boosting to hit and boosting damage. I think I rolled kinda high on the damage, dealing like 8 points or so.

Then it’s him. He upkeeps DB and charges my Wrastler with his Soldier. Unfortunately I had misplaced my models a bit, but the initial though was that the Wrastler should be outside charge range, but shit happens. He does some damage, but leaves it standing. Then he runs everything but his caster up to force some questions. A plan starts to form in my head evolving around Warpath, so I upkeep it. Barny charges his Soldier, pops his feat knocking everything but his caster down. He kills the Soldier and casts a free Flesh Eater from blood boon. The Spitter uses the move from Warpath to go forward, and then activates and goes up to kill his Harrier, triggering another Warpath move. The Wrastler goes towards the Ravagore and then charges him. He is inside Thagrosh’s command range, so it’s dice – 3. The Ravagore is a bit damaged from the Spitter shot the turn before, so my Wrastler manages to take him down, winning me the game as he is all out of beasts.

I think the initial plan would have worked, but by moving all his models so close, I saw an opening that I couldn’t resist, as well as a problem in not killing the Ravagore right away. He would most likely have killed my Wrastler and quite possible put Bad Blood on my Spitter, leaving me in a tough spot.

Journeyman League week 1 part 1

Monday afternoon, I packed my bags a went to the local gaming store for the start of the JML. When I got there it’s was packed with people. I actually don’t think I have ever seen so many people in there at the same time, so that was kinda great πŸ™‚ I quickly found a game against an opponent I had never played before. He was playing the standard Legion battle box:

Lylyth, Herald of Everblight – WB: +6

  • Carnivean – PC: 11
  • Shredder – PC: 2
  • Shredder – PC: 2
  • Shredder – PC: 2
  • Shredder – PC: 2

I was of course playing the Minions battle box:

Bloody Barnabas – WB: +6

  • Blackhide Wrastler – PC: 9
  • Ironback Spitter – PC: 8

It was a slow start for me, having not played the gators for over a year. It took some thinking and quick practice to get into the fury thing again. I don’t remember the game that clearly, but in the end he assassinated my caster, as I had made a couple of mistakes.

I totally forgot to take any pictures that night, as it was a bit chaotic trying to get some games in, but I do have a couple of really bad picturs of my Minions battle box to sprinkle this post a bit πŸ™‚

Mr. Wrastler is angry.

The next game was against a Circle battle box:

Kaya the Wildborne – WB: +6

  • Argus – PC: 4
  • Argus – PC: 4
  • Feral Warpwolf – PC: 9

It felt like I was getting the hang of the fury thing again and in this game I didn’t make any real mistakes either. Again I don’t quite remember the details, but I think my opponent accidentally placed one of his Argus too close to Barny. Barny charges the Argus with Warpath up, pops feat, hits the Argus a couple of times killing it, triggering Warpath making the Wrastler go directly towards his Feral, then topping his activation off by putting up a free Iron Flesh from blood boon on his main weapon. Then The Wrastler goes on and charges his Feral, killing it easily. The Spitter puts on some damage on the other Argus and I pass the turn. Things are looking grim for my opponent, so she decides to go for the assassination, which giving the circumstances was probably the right thing. She had trouble hitting Barny with IF on him and the one time she hit him, ARM 17 + unyielding was too much. Barny eats her πŸ™‚

So after those two games I pack my shit together and walk around looking at people play. It’s 25 mins to closing time and I’m getting ready to go home. But wait, what’s this??? It’s Peter with his Legion battle box and he wants to play! So as fast as possible I get all my stuff back on a table, and with 20 mins left we do a speed game. Yet again there’s no pictures and I can’t remember all the details, except that the game featured no less than two assassination attempts by me. First I try to double hand throw the Wrastler with the Spitter, but unfortunately the Wrastler wins the strenght check (having 2 more STR this mother fucker wins the strenght check twice in one evening /: ). Well, what to do what do… I misplaced the Wrastler, getting him killed by the Carnivean the following turn, so things are looking bad. I’ve already popped Barny’s feat, and I don’t have access to the Rise animus anymore so no throws. The Spitter then gives Barny a push and he’s now in charge range of Lyllyth πŸ™‚ He can’t seal the deal though, as she’s standing behind a wall with Tenacity on her for a nice DEF of 19. The Carnivean walks up to Barny and starts to eat him. A couple of though checks later I loose the game, but what the heck, it was fun πŸ™‚

It was a great evening at Dragons Lair, and something I will most definitely attend again. Peter gives me a ride home and spares me waiting for the bus + the 25 minutes trip home. Awesome! πŸ™‚

Caster focus eDenny part 2

So it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted something on here. I’ve been busy doing all sorts of things with my music, painting a shitload of models for the Danish Masters and various other things. I have had trouble fitting in games in my schedule, but it seems to have cleared up a bit now. I am still going forward trying to get better at this game/Cryx, playing eDenny and eAsphyxious, so my focus areas are the same.

Like in previous post about eDenny I’m still trying out Body And Soul. I have changed the list a bit from the max dude spam version, to now include Nightmare as well.

Body And Soul tier 4

Wraith Witch Deneghra – WJ: +6

  • Skarlock Thrall
  • Deathjack – PC: 12
  • Nightmare – PC: 10
  • Nightwretch – PC: 4

Ragman – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2

Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 5 Grunts: 3
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3
Mechanithralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 3
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3

Cutting back on the dude spam seemed like the way to go, as this list was going to be my pHaley drop at the Danish Masters. Event though it’s a really sucky matchup, I feel like I’d stand more of a fighting chance having two heavies in the list instead of only relying on single wound infantry charges that are not going to happen. Also, only having to paint up three min units of Drudges felt more doable than three full (ended up painting 3 min units of Drudges, 2 units of Overlords, 16 Mechanithralls, a full unit of Soulhunters, a full unit of Bane Riders, Venethrax and a Raider Captain in roughly one and a half month, besides helping a buddy of mine paint some of his Menoth ^^).

I feel this list is really good. I haven’t played it that much yet, or against a lot of different lists. I feel it has some really strong matchups and few really poor, and combined with eLich I have two really good lists. In a tournament setting it’s great a list chicken as it can force an opponent to choose a list with purification or eEiryss. It might or might not give me an advantage, but it’s something to look for.

When playing the list I tend to go for first player as I feel this puts a lot of pressure on my opponent early on, and also gives me an ability to jam his forces. I often do a Pursuit move with Denny to get her into position to feat in turn two. She will mostly camp and be incorporeal this turn only upkeeping what spells are necessary, but that is usually all three. Often she will be in a zone to start scoring if my opponent can’t get anything in to contest. Then she will back away and take another two points, maybe giving out a little focus to DJ while upkeeping whats important. If you can get to 4 CP’s the game is usually over as all you need to do is clear a zone or kill the objective. Often at this point I will still have Nightmare uncomitted, so even though my opponent might have killed DJ, I still have a very real threat for his heavies/caster.

I have been thinking about going second instead. Of course this can be important if one of the sides is really crappy for me or the opponent, but more so for the ability to start scoring first. It will give me a faster scenario win, but I’m not sure how the list will fare when not being so far up the board before the armies clash. At the moment I can’t really figure out when this is the smart move, but I feel that jamming with SPD 5 models is easier if you go first…

I will have to play it a lot more to really get to master it, but it seems to work ok for me still.

Caster focus eDenny

So I have been playing around with eDenny a bit lately as well as eAsphyxious. As I’m trying to up my game a bit I’ve been recommended to only play the top casters, which is actually a good idea. I t removes the uncertainty that my lists are good enough from the equation, as I’m 100% sure that they are. All that’s left is just playing them a lot and try to get better at the game overall without worrying about the lists.

I played this list a couple of times, but it never went well. I’m not sure if it was bad matchups (one of the games was vs pHaley, but since there’s no good matchups in Cryx against her, it doesn’t really count :))

Wraith Witch Deneghra – WJ: +6

  • Kraken – PC: 19
  • Nightwretch – PC: 4
  • Nightwretch – PC: 4

Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist – PC: 2
Pistol Wraith – PC: 3
Machine Wraith – PC: 1
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2

Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters – Cylena & 9 Grunts: 10
Bane Thralls – Leader & 9 Grunts: 8
– Bane Thrall Officer & Standard – Bane Thrall Officer & Standard 3

After this list I have tried her new Theme force Body And Soul using the tier 4 list below:

Wraith Witch Deneghra – WJ: +6

  • Skarlock Thrall
  • Deathjack – PC: 12
  • Ripjaw – PC: 5

Ragman – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2
Warwitch Siren – PC: 2

Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 9 Grunts: 5
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 9 Grunts: 5
Cephalyx Mind Slaver & Drudges – Mind Slaver & 9 Grunts: 5
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3
Mechanithralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 3
Mechanithralls – Leader & 5 Grunts: 3
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Cephalyx Overlords – Leader & 2 Grunts: 3

It’s a really infantry heavy list so I’m hoping that it might train me in playing with a shitload of models. I’ve only played it three times, but so far it has gone kinda ok, even though I have only won one of the games. It really stresses playing fast, which is something I need to keep practicing. I see some progress after getting a bit more used to playing with the Cephalyx models, as well as the Mechanithrall factory.

It’s quite funny to play, and advance deploying three full units is kinda funny. It’s also quite simple if you factor out Denny herself. What she is doing each turn is usually the hardest part of playing the list. She has to camp enough that she doesn’t get killed, which can be a challenge when she has three upkeeps out and such lovely spells as Hellmouth and Venom.

It has a lot of things going for it with a sea of tough models with AD, the Mechanithrall factory with the Necrosurgeons, up to 13 sprays/turn, putting upkeeps out on enemy models before the game even starts and the +1 on starting rolls. I feel that it’s quite strong at scenario play as it’s commandeered by one of the strongest scenario casters in the game, as well as having lots of models for scoring, and lots of models for contesting. I also feel that it’s really good at attrition play due to obvious reasons and I predict that when I learn not to clock myself out, it will be quite effective at clocking the opponent out ^^

I will put my progress in this post and link to the relevant battle reports as they get written.
